Hebrews 12:2
Fixing
our eye on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before
him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of
the throne of God ~ Hebrews 12:2
The
way of a true Christ follower is not easy. We have our cross to carry as we
follow the path Jesus wove to the hill of Calvary. We look from the world, from
the secular, to Jesus, and all the spiritual things connected to Him. We are to
look to His holy life; to His patience and perseverance in the trials He underwent;
to what He endured in order that He might stand at the right hand of the throne
of God. He is the first and the last, the pioneer and perfecter as an example
of faith and confidence in God the Father. He is in fact, the source of our
faith. Jesus suffered and was tempted as we are, but He prevailed and passed
through to joy unspeakable. What is true for Him is true for us as well. When
we “look to Jesus” we focus our spiritual vision upon the Lord. While Jesus
lived on earth He lived within the limitations of the flesh, in spite of the
kingdom of evil which enticed Him. We cannot appreciate the full and dreadful
meaning of the cross. It was a curse, for scripture states “cursed if everyone
who hangs from a tree” (Deut. 21:33). He made the atoning sacrifice for our
faith. He came as a servant, suffered shame and disgrace and a cursed death for
the sake of all people. Now, He is our Mediator, robed in glory and honour, and
He is our assurance that when we have run our race, we too shall sit down with
Christ and be at rest.
