Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall ~ Proverbs 16:18

Pride and haughtiness go hand in hand, walking down the road to the same destination: destruction. One should be able to see the road sign, but the nose is too high in the air to see what is ahead. Pride is thinking of oneself more highly than one should – it is self-love to the extreme; it is self-flattery! Pride is when one thinks they have what they really do not, or when they expect more respect than what is due them based on what they actually do have. Pride does not care who you are or your social status, for pride is over-confidence in one’s own efficiency. Yet, we are all propelled toward the downfall of pride showing itself within us. We can, however, guard ourselves against pride. The more we know, the more we apt to think little of our self. The arrogant person is usually one whom is superficial and uneducated. One who knows much is conscious then of how much he does not know. Humility leads to self improvement. The humble one studies to know their own character, strives to learn and to overcome their own deficiencies without assuming they have qualities they do not possess in the first place. Pride and haughtiness cause us to look down on others and lead us into rash and vain actions to make us “look good” before others. The bigger our pride, the greater our fall! Be careful then, at where your eyes are pointed – one needs to see what lies ahead.
