2 Peter 3:7
By
the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept
for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly ~ 2 Peter 3:7
The
heavens referred to here would most likely be the first heaven – the heaven
which is visible to the eye. The implication is that the earth and this heaven
will be changed, and if God gives the word, they will be destroyed. Most certainly,
a breath from God could do such a thing. God has only to give a command and it
is done. It is a strange thought that the heavens and the earth are reserved,
or stored up, or, are treasured up for such a purpose, but this is what Peter
is saying. They are on reserve for a future day and a future use. Ancient philosophers
believed the world would one day be destroyed by first water, then by fire, and
from where that thought derived is unknown, but remarkable too that they should
make statements which coincide with statements from the New Testament. The world
was destroyed by a flood in the day of Noah, and from this passage it seems the
world will one day end with fire upon those who have turned their backs on
goodness, love, and God, and have instead followed their own track of wicked
ways. There are other note of the world ending in the New Testament, for
example Hebrews 12:27 and Matthew 28:18-20. In Matthew 24:25 Jesus states, “Heaven
and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away.” The deeper thought
behind all this is that one day we will all stand before our Maker, and we will
give account for our life. What, then will your accounting be when you stand in
front of the Lord God Almighty? Will you be a sheep which is granted entrance
into the eternal pasture, or will you be a goat which is thrown out due to your
unbelief in Him. Jesus died on the cross for you, to bring you into His salvific
state, to give you confidence that as you stand before the Almighty, He will
have forgiven your sins. You have a choice to make…will your eternity be filled
with praise and glory, or will your eternity be filled with pain and remorse.
You choose.
