2 Timothy 3:16, 17


All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work ~ 2 Timothy 3:16, 17

We read the words “all scripture” is God-breathed. Primarily, this is talking about the OT, as still much of the NT had not been written, though some had and are included in this statement. Paul affirms what some contest these days – God was actively involved in the writing of Scripture. His involvement was so powerful and prevalent that what is written is the infallible (unfailing, effective, flawless) and authoritative word of God. God-breathed is recognition the Holy Spirit himself inspired scripture. As such, God’s word stands true in its teaching, in its rebuking, in its correcting and training. We cannot read over Scripture, or re-write scripture to mean what we want it to say. God’s word is infallible and inerrant (incapable of being wrong). The church has a responsibility to teach people this truth, for there are many whom will twist it. Beware false teachers! The people of the church have a responsibility to know this truth by reading it daily. If you are not in the Word of God, you cannot know upon which foundation to stand, and you will be like the house built upon the sand which shifts and breaks apart. Every servant of God must be mature in the Word, and thereby be equipped to battle the enemy of God, for he (Satan) also knows God’s word!

Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in sharing their own opinions ~ Proverbs 18:2 If we are going to understand something, we must fully digest it so that when we speak, we speak with wisdom. When we have only half truths in our mind, our words become empty and senseless. We then puff out air rather than understanding when we speak. A wise person will want to improve their mind through learning in various ways from the world around them. A person who delights in spiritual understanding will find peace and enjoyment in reading the Word of God on a daily basis, and in participating with God’s people in a learning and praising environment – the church! I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert ~ Isaiah 43:19 When we meet a challenge, we are often found discouraged, lost, even hopeless.
