If
you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
~ Luke 11:13
Most
parents want to give good things to their children. Most parents make mistakes
in child rearing, yet, it does not stop them from wanting more for those they
have borne and are raising. Jesus is saying that He acknowledges our brokenness
as parents, yet He also sees how our hearts yearn for our children to do well
in life, or to have we did not have, or, to be given in exceeding to what we
did have! The majority of parents want their children to be blessed. We all
know that it is not always so, that there are parents who are evil to the point
of destroying their children in the emotional and sometimes physical way. These
parents are themselves very broken, very damaged, very hurt. Our God cannot be
compared to earthly parents. There is no basis on which we can do this, for God
as our Father, as our Parent, is totally and completely holy, pure, judging the
heart and not the outer evidence. Our God always wants what is best for us, to
the point He gave up His one and only Son for us so that we might be His
children. Our God is loving and compassionate, while He disciplines and teaches
us in the way we should go. Jesus said that we could ask anything in His name
and we would receive it. Here He is saying to ask for one specific gift – that of
the Holy Spirit. This is the best gift one can receive! The Holy Spirit of
Christ is gift complete! With this Gift, we can do and be and give in amazing
ways to the world around us! Ask, and you shall receive – power, love, compassion,
discernment, truth, patience, and much more. Ask! Just ask!
