I
have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you ~ Psalm 119:11
The
verse today continues on the thought from yesterday’s devotion about our
freedom in Christ. To follow Christ fully, and to be free in Him, we must
cherish the Scriptures which have been handed down. What is written may sound “old-fashioned”
against what culture is saying, but God’s Word is a never changing truth. The problem
with the world today is that it does not know, nor does it acknowledge God’s
Word. If we do not know or read God’s Word, if we do not hide it in our heart,
we will sin against God and against others. We do not desire to be in God’s
Word, or know God’s Word, if first, we do not have a love for God above all
others. David’s view as he wrote this, should be our view too – not to sin
against God. We cannot just memorize the Word, it must be hidden in the heart,
for out of the heart come our actions. So, as David treasured God’s Word, so we
must do likewise. As it was David’s way to fight temptation, so it would serve
us as well, for God’s Word uncovers sin and promotes holiness. There is no
better way to live.
