Malachi 3:1
“I will send my
messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are
seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you
desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty ~ Malachi 3:1
Malachi was a
prophet from the Old Testament times, somewhere during the time of 445 and 425
B.C. For us Christians, he is considered the last prophet before the arrival of
John the Baptist and Jesus Christ the Messiah. Isaiah had foretold of this same
messenger in 40:3: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way
of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God”. Luke 1:76 then
confirms this in the birth of John the Baptist. This verse is considered as one
of several of the most Messianic verses in the Old Testament, and this verse in
particular is considered one of the “most brilliant and revealing prophecies of
Jesus Christ in the whole Bible” (Coffman). In our day, we still have voices which
declare Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Saviour of the world. In our day,
we still have people who reject the voice of the one who cries out, trying to
lead the hearer to recognize the One they desire is here and present. We no
longer have to wait, for He has arrived, yet still people search for hope and
justice and peace in other places and in other things. John the Baptist was to
call the people to repentance, and point the way to the One greater than
himself. Witnesses today do the same. Have you heard the Good News? Have you
responded to the One who is the covenant God, the One you desire and seek?
