Ephesians 4:22-24

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness ~ Ephesians 4:22-24

We abandon our old way of life when Jesus enters our heart. Some of that just seems to automatically happen, as the Holy Spirit renews our minds, our goals, our thoughts. The other aspect of this is that we make conscious decisions to change our way to reflect the teachings we have received from and about Christ. Our being made new means our nature is spiritual, not carnal, and this is a change into holiness and righteousness, and truth. It is a moral good we find in the transformation of our mind and heart. Before Christ, our thoughts lead us to desire finding fulfillment in all sorts of lascivious thoughts, in finding our meaning in money, or in objects, or in substance abuse. All are vain and empty, and not one of those ways of finding meaning bring true meaning to our life. When we put on the righteousness of Christ, that old way of life will transform itself into one we cannot even envision at the time, but once Christ comes and makes us new, the old way of life vanishes into the thin air of the past. Praise God for the new!
