Zechariah 4:6

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty ~ Zechariah 4:6

I have written before how we try to use our own “might and power” when it comes to having confidence in our accomplishments. We instrumentally try to affect the outcome of our circumstances, through our “might and power” of control. For some, this is a security measure. They cannot cope with the changes which may alter their plans, and so, they try to create the ending they desire. In this way though, we try to substitute our temporal means for the work of the Holy Spirit, or God’s glory. We then can boast, just as was sung in the old Frank Sinatra song, “I did it my way.” But, my way is not the best way! The only source of spiritual prosperity is through the work, the efficient work, of the Holy Spirit of God. It is He who transforms our character into the image of Jesus Christ. It is through Him we overcome the world and its evil, its temptations, its deception. The Holy Spirit brings truth, the Truth of Christ into our heart. We cannot do that by our own power and might. And, it is through the Holy Spirit we bring glory to the grace of God. We need God’s Spirit, because through Him the powerful and Divine influence on us is acted to completeness. It is not by our might, nor by our power, but by His Spirit are we able to do what God has called us to do in our daily walk.
