Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who
are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest ~ Matthew 11:28
Are you weary and tired
today? It is not hard to feel so in these dismal days of winter. The sun does
not shine brightly, the days are cold, snowy, and if the weather does warm up a
bit, it is rainy and overcast. This is the climate that I live in, and maybe
you do as well. Weariness seeps into the body and the soul. There is One
though, who is our light in the day, the sunshine of our soul, and his name is
Jesus. He tells us if we are weary and burdened to come to him. It is an
interesting call, for it indeed calls us to simply believe in him, and if we
do, he will care for us. It calls for the longing of a child to find comfort in
the security of a parent or an older sibling. And in the answered call comes
the relief. We can give over our problems, our cares and concerns, our sins and
guilt, our oppressed spirit, our not feeling “good enough”, and we pass them on
to Him. Our ill-fitting yoke is released from our life and He will then carry
it for us, relieving our aching shoulders. Jesus is speaking to the Jews here,
over-burdened by the Mosaic Law, additionally burdened by the Laws the
Pharisees and Scribes had orally added to their load, trying in vain to please
God by their acts. Jesus’ new covenant gives us release from all this. The blood
of Jesus invites us to put down our load, and receive the salvation offered
through His shed sacrifice of blood. Sinners find their hearts flooded with
relief through repentance, those who are dealing with temptations are cleansed.
Every man and woman and child is invited to come, and all are promised rest. Come
to the only One who can give you a new life of peace.
