Proverbs 3:5, 6
Trust in the Lord with
all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit
to him, and he will make your paths straight ~ Proverbs 3:5, 6
God asks only one thing
from us, yet, so often we falter in completely trusting in Him. From the
ancient Israelite’s to those who are now Jesus’ followers, we gather all our
resources from the world and expect those securities to sustain us. We seek
earthly reassurances and then rely solely upon them. We place our trust in
stocks, and our assets, in our employment and social contacts, in our company
and our family. All these may fail. The stock market can crash, our assets burn
down. We may lose our job and our social contacts may turn against us. The long-standing
company we work for, and are employed by, may close and fold, and our loved ones
may pass away. Not one is secure. Only by trusting in God are we granted what
is the Divine life. When we trust in Him, we are one with Him. Through Him we
are promised peace of mind and contentment. He does not promise us material
blessings as too often today modern preachers proclaim. If He chooses to bless
us in this way, that is great, but more often our blessings are internal rather
than external. In our total reliance upon Him we prove our love for Him, and
our desire to please Him. Trusting in Him though, does not mean we bypass our
own understanding or forming our own plans. It means that as I place my trust
in Him, I trust Him to grant to me an understanding above my own natural understanding,
so that as I make my plans, they are dependent upon God’s direction. He is the
Supreme Director of all events.
