Leviticus 20:8
Keep my decrees and
follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy ~ Leviticus 20:8
Jesus said to give unto
Caesar what belonged to him, and to God what belonged to him. Now, Jesus was
referring to paying taxes at this time, not directly to following government
laws, but there are possible interpretations here. All of society has laws,
whether they are written, or subliminal, and Caesar represents the government or,
larger society. A criminal gang has laws, even though they strive to live
against the law of the government and society. Within their group there are
behaviour’s allowed as well as those which are not, and you had best not fall
into the second group or you will get your due. Our Government has laws, and if
we do not follow them, we may find ourselves incarcerated and in the prison
system. The laws of God are much easier to follow, and they are given to us,
not to hinder our relationships or our place in society, but actually to enhance
them. Following God’s laws, or decrees as it is said here, allows us to live without
regrets, without the possibility of getting into a predicament! And following
God’s laws and doing them, does not just mean what the law of the land is, but God’s
laws according to His holiness. Jesus broke the Ten Commandments down into two:
Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and love
your neighbour as yourself. By following these two, we set aside idols, we give
worship only to God, we set aside striving for our neighbours property and we
set aside comparison with them. God becomes our all, and our neighbour is loved
as we love our own self. We do all this because we have a holy God we want to
follow and abide with, inwardly and outwardly. We, as Christians, are a
separated people, filled with His holy Spirit, who helps us to live as His holy
people. Through the power of the Spirit, we live within the holy boundaries of
God’s law of love.
