Psalm 16:8
I
keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be
shaken ~ Psalm 16:8
The
right arm, or right side of the body in terms of the Bible, refers to the place
of honour and dignity, but also it is a place of defense or protection. Here,
the psalmist has God in this place at all times as a Deity to honour, and as a
protective shield. He has his eyes “always” on the Lord which means he is
meditating, professing with his lips, walking in the ways of the Lord in every
moment of every day. It is about the psalmists conviction to hold God there in
that place. We sometimes have to assess what it is we put before our eyes. We
have a choice to place those things before us which are not good to look at,
not good for our children or grandchildren to see, yet, there they are because
we choose to look. When we make God our choice we see the good, the righteous,
the holy; we see all that is wholesome, and we are not ashamed for our children
or grandchildren to see what we are looking at. From biblical stories in the Bible,
we know what happened to King David when his eyes were turned away from the
Lord toward a rooftop bathing area. Sin, disaster, family issues, death
followed him from that one experience of turning his eyes away from God. Peter
too took his eyes off God and began to sink in the waters of Galilee. Only when
we keep our eyes on the Son of God will our days, though they may have
troubles, be led to strength and victory. Through Him who is at our right arm,
ready to protect and to save, will success be ours, in this earth and in the
heavenly realm to come.
