Deuteronomy 30:19

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you
that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live ~ Deuteronomy 30:19

The silent witnesses of sky and dirt speak about the importance of God’s words, and testify to His truth. We rarely, if ever, think of the heavens and the earth as recording the words of God, let alone later being called upon to recollect His words. Yet here, these inanimate objects will speak for God if necessary. We do not think in this way. If we want a witness, they have to have eyes to literally see and a mouth which can literally speak. Our witnesses are alive, not a part of creation in the way the heavens and the earth are. But, indeed the earth and the heavens do witness that God speaks to us the truth of life and death, blessings and curses. When we express words of obedience or of disobedience to God’s ways, the consequence is either life or death. So many people get stuck on the word “obedience”. God is a tyrannical God they think. Do this or die! This is disregarding that fact that God is a God of patience and long suffering. It is disregarding that God loves more than we can ever love, so much so that in His long suffering He sent Jesus Christ, His Son, to die in our stead. God wants obedience, yes, but it is so that we will live a blessed life, a full life, a wonderful life! Obedience to God is not hard, but it is demanding. We must love Him above all other things we may possess, or desire, and we must love others as we would wish to be loved. This means I speak to my brothers and sisters in Christ with compassion, kindness, patience, and I set myself as a servant to God’s will. Then, I will find life and blessing, and so will my children, and my children’s children.
