John 1:5
The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it ~ John 1:5
Little solar garden lights
are a common sight these days. We place them in amongst our flowers and plants,
or along our front sidewalk, inviting people to our front door. My sister has
so many little solar lights, not only in her garden, but also on her deck, so
that the night around her home becomes a mystery of enchantment. It is truly
beautiful to see all the little lights dancing in the night as we sit and talk
in the dusk of the evening. How much we both would miss if all those little
various solar lights were not around us. The evening may become dark, but we
sit in light. Darkness cannot shut out a light, no matter how small and
insignificant it might seem. In the Bible, darkness is that which is found in
either ignorance, guilt, misery, or sin. I have written about truth, and how in
our world now there are many “truths”, but these “truths” are founded on
darkness, for they have no foundation, instead they rely on emotion. Emotion in
a human being is to be the least trusted, for as Jesus said, it is the heart
which deceives us (Matthew 15:18-20). Truth, therefore, must come from
somewhere outside of us. Truth is the foundation, not the emotion, and here,
Truth is found in the light which shines in the darkness, namely, Jesus Christ.
When Jesus comes to live in our heart, he breaks through the darkness of sin,
ignorance, guilt and misery. His presence within us opens our eyes and our
hearts to his truths of love, patience, kindness, eternity, grace, salvation.
Jesus is the light, and we are the receptors of that light. It is not until we
intercept his beam of light that we recognize him as that light. Without
Christ, we live in darkness.
