Joel 2:23

 Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before ~ Joel 2:23


This is a promise of restoration for the people. Not only were they to rejoice in the land which was now being filled with the nourishment of the rains, but they were to rejoice in their God who is faithful. Our modern world takes for granted that the sun and the rain are “just there”, just part of the weather patterns of this world. They don’t attribute the sun or the rain to God. But this is “shortsighted” says Coffman. Everything depends upon God. As Christians, the rain we rejoice in is Jesus Christ, for He is our living water. He is our faithful and righteous teacher. The Gospels are the message of rain, for their words bring great blessings to the reader, its message gives divine direction, it revives, it instructs, it refreshes and it makes the reader fruitful in life. Jesus was given to us as a gift of salvation. Joel writes the rains were given “as before” indicating the people had now returned to their God. Often the people of Israel would follow other gods and be led astray. We serve other gods in this world as well, but always we are being called back to the One God, the True God, the Only God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our land is living in a drought because we have turned our back on the Living Waters of Jesus Christ. He is the only way to find abundance. Return to Him and you will find great joy and peace. He is faithful to reign down upon you His blessings.
