Proverbs 27:1

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring ~ Proverbs 27:1

Often, we make our plans for the next day, or the next week. We delight in making plans, for it organizes our life, it makes us feel we have some control over a world which has lost control. Some people are determined to not let anything out of their control, and so have every future detail outlined. James, the brother of Jesus, reminds us in 4:14 that we do not know what will happen tomorrow, for we are “as a vapour that appears for a little while, then vanishes away.” The Apostle Paul, too, tells his listeners in Acts 20:22 that the Spirit has bound him to go to Jerusalem, but he does not know what will happen to him there. It is not that we should not make plans. We should plan for the future, we should have vision of where our life will take us, what we want to do, how we want to grow, bless, nurture, and prosper. What we ought not to do is leave God’s will out of our plans. James continues with the words we ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will do this or that.” Proverbs too, in 16:3 reminds us that we are to “commit our work to the Lord, and [then] our plans will be established.” We are assured of God’s control and knowledge of our days and our time. We are in His hands. We are each created in the time we are for a purpose, and each one of us has a specific purpose. God knew us when we were in the womb, before we were born, and He has plans for each one us says Jeremiah 1:5. We will plan, and continue to plan, and even when we follow the Lord in consultation with our plans, we may not know where we will be tomorrow. The Holy Spirit within us is as a wind blowing where it will, and God’s Spirit leads us, just as the wind blows (John 3:8). There may be many twists and turns in our lives when we are led by God’s Spirit, but this we may know with confidence – God is at the helm of our life when we commit it to Him and He will take us where we need to be tomorrow.
