2 Peter 3:10, 11
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives ~ 2 Peter 3:10, 11
We ought to live our life in expectation, awaiting the day of Jesus return. Yet, I doubt that most of us wake up thinking Jesus may come today. It just is not a thought which is at the forefront of our mind upon waking, or even upon moments of the day. Peter here warns us though so that we will be ready at a moment’s notice. Peter knew, as do you and I, how life and circumstances can change in a moment without notice. Yesterday I listened to a sermon by John Piper on 2 Thessalonians 1-2:3. Paul wrote extensively here about the second coming of Jesus Christ. There he warns we are to be on aware that the second coming of Jesus will be the most glorious and the most terrible event. Glorious for the believer; terrible the unbeliever. Jesus will come with vengeance, he will come to set all that is wrong to right with fire, a terrible roar, and laying bare all that we know right now. There could be nothing more terrible than being separated from the Lord God forever and ever. For this reason, Peter and Paul tell us to live holy and godly lives. Does this mean we will be perfect, no, we will make mistakes. To be holy and live godly lives means that we live separate from the world’s lusts, that we obey his commands, that we repent as we are made aware of our sin and short-comings, and that we believe in him whom is the Saviour of the world. We will in this way and we are ready for that day when he will come like a thief – and then, as it is written near the end of Revelation, we too will say, “Come, Lord Jesus, Come!”
