Deuteronomy 18:15
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him ~ Deuteronomy 18:15
This promise, spoken through Moses, was a long time in coming. The nation of Hebrew people looked for him to come, year after year. What made them remember this promise and hold faithfully to its arrival? What makes us believe this Prophet/Messiah will come back again as we wait, year after year? The promise was not spoken by man, but by God through man, this is the reason they waited in expectancy and it is the reason we wait in anticipation. God’s Word never falls nor fails. Joshua 21:45 reads, “Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to Israel failed: every one was fulfilled.” It is interesting to note the word from Deuteronomy, the prophetic word, was quoted frequently in the New Testament, for from the mouth of Moses, it directly points to the Lord Jesus Christ. Peter quoted this verse in Acts 3:22, Stephen in Acts 7:37, and the crowds in John 6:14, affirming again that Jesus was the long-awaited prophet for the nation. Jesus was raised up by God, not of himself. Not one man, or woman could ever take on this honour, but only the one appointed by God. He was God incarnate, God born as an Israelite child, born in and from their own people. And, he is one we are to listen to for his Word as well as his Deeds are mighty. He is our merciful and faithful high priest, our advocate. We are in the season we call Advent as we await the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. Yet, we as Christians are ever living in the spirit of Advent, for we are awaiting the Christ’s return. Then, we will be one with him forever. There will be no turning from his Word, there will be no more tears or sorrow, no more pain or death. There will be life everlasting with the One we are pleased to worship continually.
