Hebrews 1:1, 2

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe ~ Hebrews 1:1, 2

We are reminded very much here of the beginning of John’s Gospel – the Word, which became flesh. The writer here looks at the “what was before Christ” to the “what is now through Christ”, and the difference is vast. Before God’s people heard God’s message through one whom God had placed his Spirit upon, and they would prophetically call out the words of God. Now, “in these last days” God has spoken directly to us through the literal spoken word from the mouth of Jesus Christ. This God, the writer unapologetically states, is a God who speaks. Only people can speak. Now God speaks, bringing him into our personal lives as a personal God. What a difference this makes for the reader. God is no longer a concept, but God is a person. God is no longer “way out there”, but God is “right here”. It is because God became man that he was revealed to us, made known to more than the Hebrew world, so that the Gentile world then became included in this revelation. It is because God became personal that we are brought into regeneration through his death and resurrection. It is because God became a man that we have now been held responsible and accountable for judgment for our sins. It is because God became man that we are now under his grace of forgiveness for our repented sins. We no longer need wonder what God says, or what his character is, for as we read the words of Jesus in our Bible, we can hear him speak directly to us too, and we can see him act in love for all. His words will never pass away. His word is truth. His word is love. His word is spoken through his heir, the heir of all things!
