John 10:14, 15
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep” ~ John 10:14, 15
We are Christ’s people, Christ’s church, and though we are, we cannot say that our knowledge of Christ is as thorough as his knowledge of us. God the Father knows Jesus as his own Son. Yet, as his own Son, Jesus is also God. Imagine a father taking his son to his bosom, taking him in his arms with a giant bear hug. See there the closeness, so tight you cannot distinguish one from the other. This is the relationship between God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are one, and so is their knowledge of each, and so is the knowledge of God for us. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, obediently came down from heaven to become the Shepherd of his people, knowing we needed a shepherd to guide and lead us. For us, he lay down his life as a sacrifice so to be our redeeming Saviour. There are many wolves, and thieves and robbers ready to steal and destroy our soul, but Christ stands with his Shepherd’s hook and staff as our protector, for it is our weakness he knows and defends. We draw closer to a babe in a manger as the time of Christmas draws near, but the babe came with the sole purpose to save the sheep from their own disaster of sin. He has received power from on high to do just that for us. He is our Shepherd, our Protector, our Redeemer! And, he knows you and me more intimately than we may even know ourself. Isn’t that amazing?
