John 1:1, 2, 14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning ~ John 1:1, 2, 14

We have just passed our first Advent Sunday of the year, and now we are beginning with the first day of the month of December, which looks forward to the return of Jesus Christ with Christmas. The Old Testament prophets looked forward to the coming of the Messiah, the Promised One. Many thought the promises that would come with the Messiah would be a release from oppression by those who ruled their nation and people. This was the belief even when the Messiah, Jesus, began his earthly ministry, as his disciples still thought the oppression he would release them from would be worldly control. It was not to be so. The release which would come from the Beginning One would be spiritual release. He would bring in a new era when God would no longer be a distant Word, but a Comforting, Guiding Presence. The Word – Jesus Christ, who spoke the world into formation would become like us, human in form, so as to draw us once more into the relationship we were meant to have from the beginning of time – to be one with Him. We look forward now to the day when we celebrate a spectacular birth of God becoming Man, but we also look forward to the return of the Word to capture up those who believe in Him for eternity. Leviticus 26:12 says, “I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.” “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Amen.
