Isaiah 55:6

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near ~ Isaiah 55:6

I cannot imagine when the Lord cannot be found, for I know his presence to always be with those who follow and love him. Isaiah knew though that there were times when the Lord could not be found – that is, when sin entered into a life. We who believe and have received Jesus Christ as our Saviour need not worry about the Lord hiding from us, for he paid our sin price on the cross, redeeming us from our sins. The Israelites did not have the ongoing presence of God’s Holy Spirit within them which is the power we have received when we accepted Jesus into our heart; the power and presence which leads and guides us into righteousness. Jesus had not at that point suffered the cross and the powerful cleansing which came to us through his shed blood. Their cleansing came when an animal was sacrificed for their sins, but not always was that the history of Israel’s people. The fell away many a time. All they needed to do was ask for forgiveness. It is when they, or we, do not ask for forgiveness that the Lord’s ears are shut to us, it is then when the Lord cannot be found. “Repent”, “turn from wicked ways” says Isaiah, then he will have mercy on them, and he will freely pardon (vss. 7, 8).  His pardon is free for those who seek him, for those who turn away from their wicked past, and come to him for his redeeming power.
